2007 Business Plan Competition

One of the participants, Joe D'Agostino, is a student in our class. Congratulations to him and the other participants! Please consider attending this event.

We want to extend an invitation to you and your students to attend the 2007 UD Business Plan Competition Finals. The finals are being held on Friday April 20th, at 1:30 pm in Lerner Hall 125. At the Finals, the students have ten minutes to “pitch” their ideas to a seasoned judging panel, comprised of venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and service providers. The students are then “grilled” by the judges for about 10 minutes. At the completion, the judges select the overall competition winner. The Finalists were selected from a larger group based upon the submission of a written business plan. An awards ceremony and reception follows the competition. The five finalists for this year are:

•Matt Russell (MBA) and Chad Main (MBA)
Logic Consulting – Logic Management and Consulting
provides a broad range of services to the sports business
community.
• Joseph D’Agostino (Finance & Marketing)
Long Island Swim School – Provides swimming
instructions in the comfort of the client’s own swimming
pool.
• Louis Girifalco (Marketing)
Black Box Music – A recording studio and full service
producer of local concerts and music events.
• Sean Darras (Engineering)
SNAPDECK ™ – Produces simple and innovative
products that allow customers to inexpensively add
outdoor living space.
• Mike Kobb (Finance) and Mike Barugel (Arts &
Sciences)
Mike’s Backyard Restaurant – A themed restaurant
located in downtown Newark, DE.

As you can see, the students have vast array of ideas, and also hail form across the University. Please encourage your students, especially those interested in entrepreneurship to attend.

Research Proposal Update

THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL DUE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO Wed, APRIL 18, 2007.

Your Research Proposal is due in five and a half weeks. PLEASE EMAIL ME THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE IDEA THAT YOU INTEND TO WORK ON AND GET MY APPROVAL THIS WEEK (by March 16). If you have already started working on it and have a timetable all sorted out, that’s fantastic! In any case, please remember that the steps in the marketing research process build upon one another. Make sure you are involved at each step so the project will meet your personal standards of excellence. There’s nothing worse than trying to develop a survey when the person who was responsible for collecting secondary data was, ahem, not as conscientious as you would have liked. So, divide up the work at each step, have everyone participate in all phases, read chapter 20 so you know about marketing research reports, write as you go and integrate your work each week.

Here’s one possible time table. You may need more or less time for each section depending on your topic and your team:

By 3/16: Intro/Background/Secondary Research
By 3/23: Research Design Plan/ Measurement
3/24-4/1: Spring Break
By 4/6: Sampling Issues and data collection issues
By 4/13: Cover page/Executive Summary/Conclusions
By 4/18: Proof read and edit

I am happy to meet with your team to provide whatever support I can. This is entirely optional and up to you. If your team would like to meet with me, we will find a time when everyone will attend; I have found that when I meet with incomplete teams we wind up creating more confusion than we resolve.

You can also email questions about your project to me. Please remember to copy everyone on your team and to put 302 and your topic on the subject line, so I will be able to identify your team and send everyone the reply.

2007 John Swain Memorial Scholarship

The application forms can be found here (ApForm1, ApForm2, ApForm 3). This is a terrific opportunity, and many students can qualify for it.

This $3,000 Scholarship is funded by the Direct Marketing Association of Washington Educational Foundation. Our goal is to reward student interest in the field of direct marketing.
This Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time junior or senior who demonstrates an interest in making interactive or direct marketing a career.

Applicants must complete the scholarship application and send it, along with two professor recommendations, by Thurs. April 26, 2007 by 5:00 p.m. to the "Swain Scholarship Selection Headquarters, 2425 Wilson Blvd. Suite 500, Arlington, VA 22201."

The Scholarship Recipient will receive the award this summer 2007, and will be invited to attend the DMAW's Annual Conference, mid-July, in Washington, D.C.

GRE/GMAT/LSAT/ETC Free Practice Test

On Saturday, March 3rd at 12 pm, Career Services is sponsoring a Free Practice Test event on campus. Students can opt to take a free practice GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, DAT, OAT, or PCAT exam. Students will experience how the tests are proctored and worded so that they have a better understanding of what to expect in their post-baccalaureate pursuits. In addition, they will receive a complete performance break down, highlighting both their strengths and weaknesses.

Students are encouraged to pre-register so that enough test-material can be ordered. They can do so by calling 1-800-KAP-TEST or stopping by the Newark Test Prep and Admissions Center at 59 Main Street in Newark, DE.

As a side note, Kaplan Test Prep is only involved in the proctoring and supplying of the practice test material. This event is sponsored by the University of Delaware’s Career Services Center.
